"Vasijas Silbadoras" are sound instruments of pre-Columbian origin, with archaeological records dating back over 3,000 years. The creation of these clay-fired objects incorporates the four natural elements: earth, fire, air, and water, which flows through their inner chambers to produce sound through the combined movement of air and liquid.
Originally used for storing and transporting water, they served in rituals to connect with animals, spirits, and supernatural beings through their sounds. Symbolically, these sounds are interpreted as cries or calls that invoke ancestors, reflecting the transition between human, animal, and mythical realms.
For the exhibition “Ancestral,” Zambrano, has created newly interpreted vasijas using traditional techniques. His pieces embody a transformation between nature and technology and evoke fossils, suggesting a life cycle that spans humor and psychedelia.
The instruments are performatively activated and interpreted by musicians, with the exhibition itself conceived as a social and ritual event. This creates an abstract sound dialogue in which silence, whistling, and cries hypnotically establish a transcendent atmosphere.
