Electronic music is ubiquitous today and expresses itself in a wide variety of forms. Genres such as techno or hip-hop are unimaginable without electronic means. But the work of composers such as Karlheinz Stockhausen and Eliane Radigue is also significantly shaped by their use of electronic sound generation.
This course provides an introduction to this diversity. Using selected examples, we will demonstrate characteristic techniques, such as sampling, the recording and further processing of selected sounds, or ring modulation, the modification of sounds through external signals. In particular, we will focus on similarities and interactions between very different musical practices, highlighting connections, commonalities, and differences between the avant-garde and pop culture.
How are similar methods used by artists such as Karlheinz Stockhausen and Daft Punk? What are the similarities and differences? For each of the techniques presented, there will be opportunities to explore them practically using software or provided instruments.
