Toward the end of his life, Franz Schubert composed one of his few great violin works, for a famous virtuoso of his time: the C-major Fantasy was intended for Josef Slavík, known as the Bohemian Paganini. Beethoven’s celebrated Kreutzer Sonata—named after its dedicatee, Rodolphe Kreutzer, even though he disliked the piece—had initially been written for George Bridgetower, a British violinist who was also the first to perform it—only to fall out with Beethoven shortly afterward. These two works are at the center of Leonidas Kavakos and Enrico Pace’s duo program, which also includes music by contemporary Swiss composer Richard Dubugnon.
