The Third Room

Callie’s presents The Third Room, a new performance series that opens the institution’s sound studio to the public for the first time. Transforming a space traditionally reserved for production into one of collective listening, the series invites audiences into an intimate environment where sound, process, and experimentation unfold.

Pioneering composers Agnese Menguzzato, Hyunhye Angela Seo, Aida Shirazi, and Mariam Rezaei present new and in process works. Every artist has been invited to be in residence in the sound studio, working with collaborators and experimenting with the studio’s equipment and flexible setup.

A connective thread runs through these composers’ practices. They continue to work with instruments they studied at a younger age — the Renaissance lute, piano, Iranian santoor, and turntables. Reimagining these instruments, they have evolved with them, mixing analogue and electronic sound vocabularies into progressive composition.

The studio’s intimate setting facilitates a deep-listening experience. It highlights the artists’ technical mastery and offers a rare glimpse into their creative processes. Across three sessions, each artist will experiment alongside different collaborators, techniques, and the studio’s diverse equipment — from modular diffusers to spatial interventions — so every session becomes a distinct iteration, open to improvisation and discovery.

The Third Room series is funded by Musikfonds e.V. by means of the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media (BKM). The project is also generously supported by initiative neue musik Berlin e.V, the Karin & Uwe Hollweg Stiftung, and the Checkpoint Charlie Foundation.
