Malte Giesen studied Composition/Computer Music at the State University of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart with Marco Stroppa and Oliver Schneller, followed by further studies at CNSM Paris with Gérard Pesson and with Hanspeter Kyburz and electroacoustic music with Wolfgang Heiniger at the University of the Arts Berlin. 

He has taught at the University of Music Karlsruhe, the University of the Arts Berlin, and the Berlin University of the Arts. Since 2021, he has been the head of the Studio for Electroacoustic Music at the Academy of Arts Berlin.

Among other awards, he received the 1st Prize at the German Music Competition for Composition in 2009, a prize from the SWR Orchestra Composition Masterclass in 2012, the Carl von Ossietzky Prize of the City of Oldenburg in 2016, Neue Szenen III from the Deutsche Oper Berlin, 2nd Prize at the Stuttgart Composition Prize in 2017, the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation Advancement Award in 2020 and the Prize of the Lake Constance Conference 2024. 

He has been awarded scholarships from the Association of Friends of the HfMDK Stuttgart, the Oscar and Vera Ritter Foundation, the Supporters’ Association of the University of the Arts Berlin, the Music Fund e.V., and the Elsa Neumann Scholarship from the State of Berlin.

His works have been performed extensively both in Germany and internationally, in collaboration with the RSO Stuttgart, WDR Symphony Orchestra, Decoder Ensemble, oh-ton Ensemble, Sonar Quartet, Quatuor Diotima, Sonic.Art Saxophone Quartet, Ensemble Ascolta, ensemble recherche, ensemble mosaik, ensemble adapter, l’instant donné, Ensemble Kuraia, Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart, Ardey Saxophone Quartet, Namascae Lemanic Modern Ensemble, SUONO MOBILE global, at festivals including Donaueschingen Music Days, ECLAT Stuttgart, Wien Modern, Klangwerkstatt Berlin, AchtBrücken Cologne, Ars Nova Rottweil, blurred edges Hamburg, and Wittener Tage für neue Kammermusik.
