Program description
The DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program is one of the most renowned residency programs for international artists and cultural practitioners in the fields of visual arts, film, literature, and music & sound. Each year, it awards residencies in Berlin to around twenty outstanding cultural producers.
The grant was established to offer awardees time and space to focus on their creative practice without any production obligations. The program fellows are invited to actively engage with Berlin’s and Germany’s vibrant cultural scenes, as well as with different communities within the city.
Target group
Internationally known and outstanding artists from abroad who would like to come to Berlin to work on their works and exchange ideas. The age does not matter.
Music & Sound
We welcome any form of adventurous, exceptional, and innovative sound work that expands and challenges our understanding of contemporary music. Traditional music (which is not adapted for contemporary practice), as well as commercial music, film, opera & theatre music, are excluded. The program is intended for composers and composer-performers, but not interpreters. There are four fellowships in the field of music & sound per year.
Scholarship benefit
The scholarship payments in monthly instalments allow for a reasonable standard of living; furnished apartments are provided. Travel and luggage costs (also for partners and children if they stay in Berlin during the entire invitation period) are covered, as well as health and accident insurance and German lessons.
Application
Applications for the 2026 residencies for film, literature and music & sound are now open. The application deadline is December 15, 2024, 23:59 CET.
In the visual arts category, candidates are nominated and selected by a specialist jury. Accordingly, applications cannot be submitted in this field.
